Does a small business actually need a bookkeeping service?
By Melissa Guy
Not a department. A cadence. If the books are a source of dread, the company is already paying for the problem — just not to a professional.
Large or small, bookkeeping becomes a nightmare the moment it is nobody’s real job. The owner does it at night, badly, or not at all, and then pays for that choice every April.
You do not need a finance department to need a service. You need one if any of these are true: you are guessing at cash, sales tax is a surprise, contractors are paid without a plan for 1099s, or QuickBooks has become a place you do not open.
The service that fits a small company is narrower than people fear. Reconcile the accounts. Keep payables and receivables honest. Produce a simple report. Flag the thing that will become a tax problem if it sits another month. That is a practice, not a headcount.
Personal books belong in the same conversation when the owner and the company share a wallet. We do that work too, without pretending a household and an LLC are the same file.
If you have the time and the temperament, learn it — we train people who want the desk back. If you do not, hiring the work out is not an indulgence. It is how the company stops spending its best hours on its least loved task.
